"Open Studio" Classes with Melinda Arthur
(Graphite Pencil, Colored Pencil, Pen & Ink and Charcoal)
6 Mondays, April 6 - May 11, 2026, 12:30 - 3:30 pm
Tuition: $150, maximum 8 participants, no beginners.
Location: Lynchburg (The Art Box classroom)
New offering by popular request. Melinda will be conducting an open studio format in select media with emphasis on drawing. The classroom will be open to students wanting a community atmosphere to work on projects of their choice while Melinda is available to help answer questions and assist with issues from composition to finishing as well as performing demos. This class requires at least some previous drawing experience. We will help each other by sharing ideas, critiques, and creative discussions. (Sorry, no watercolor, pastels, oils, gouache or acrylic paints.)

This class will include demonstrations on technique, composition, and color study using a variety of pencils, charcoal and soft pastels. You will also learn art terminology used to discuss art and plenty of printed information showing verbiage, types of compositions, and how to use pencils for drawing, sketching and thumbnails; and, finally, studying color application using pastels.
Materials required:
pencils, drawing paper and a sketchbook that will hold 8 1/2" x 11" paper.

Encaustic and Mixed Media Painting with Christine Rooney
6 Thursdays, beginning April 9, 2026, 1:30 - 3:30 pm
Tuition: $190 and the opportunity to stay an extra hour for $10 per class
Note: For those who cannot make all 6 consecutive classes, 2 make-up sessions are scheduled after the 6 weeks. For those who have attended all 6 sessions, you may continue for $15 per session.
Location: Lynchburg (The Art Box classroom)
This class is for students who want to experiment with various mediums. Previous experience using soft pastels, oils, watercolor, cold and hot waxes, drawing, or printing is encouraged. There is a strong emphasis on encaustic painting which is an ancient process of painting with molten beeswax, resin and pigments. We will be using heated surfaces, heat guns, and small blow torches. Students should understand basic composition and color theory since they are expected to work independently on their own compositions. The class includes demonstrations, discussions, and emphasis on safety. Materials can be purchased at the Art Box.
