Art on 12th
Built in 1924, our building has had many lives, starting as a steam bakery in Downtown Lynchburg. On the corner of 12th and Grace, it currently houses the multiple facets of our Lynchburg family. This is the home for our Art on 12th community.
The upper floor houses 9 artist studios that feature french doors and huge windows that flood each space with light. The mezzanine level is home to our two classrooms. Huge windows fill the rooms with light and they are equipped with tables, easels, storage cabinets, a hot plate for encaustics, a large mat cutter and a kitchenette. We offer a variety of classes, workshops and demos.
The Art on 12th studio artists welcome visitors during their open studio tour in November as well as by chance or by appointment throughout the year. We have galleries upstairs and downstairs that showcase art, antique photos and our building's original floor plans.
Come and celebrate the arts and meet the artists at Art on 12th.

Studio 1: Amanda Sandos and Melinda Arthur
Amanda C. Sandos
www.amandacsandos.com [email protected] (Amanda Sandos on fb and instagram) Amanda C. Sandos is always exploring the concept of "Animanity," a term she coined for her Goddard master's thesis as "the state of being animal." She is a former professional zookeeper who believes we have much to learn from animals and by understanding that we are animals. Through a green practice of non-toxic products, upcycling, and recycling, she explores these ideas, giving a portion of the proceeds back to animals through organizations like the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. She was honored by the Mara Conservancy and the Wildlife Conservation Corp's invitation to paint giraffes for giraffes, and by the Oceanic Society's invitation to paint Albatross for their conservation efforts on the Marion Atoll. She is accepting commissions. |
Melinda Arthur
[email protected] I am Melinda Arthur and Welcome! I work primarily in oils on small panels, specializing in pet portrait commissions and wildlife/nature studies. Pencil is also a favored medium for my work. I achieved my Bachelor of Fine Arts ('81) in Painting and Printmaking and my Master of Fine Arts ('86) in Ceramics, both from Radford University. For 14 years I was a potter traveling to craft shows far and wide. In 2010 I changed gears completely and switched back to painting, making a full, happy circle. My goal is to capture the essence of our furry brethren with dignity and a sense of humor. My work has hung in numerous shows and galleries in the Lynchburg and Bedford Area. Pet portraits have gone to homes from Colorado to Georgia. Commissions are welcome. |

[email protected] Growing up a military brat, moving every year, I learned to love change. This was very freeing. After painting in oils and then watercolor I finally settled on acrylic. However, I soon learned the freedom of experimentation. I discovered all the different surfaces you can paint on, and the addition of collaging, stamping, texture and/or adding colored papers. There's just no end to what you can do. I paint realistic or abstract. As long as I can connect to the subject, I will use whatever method that best expresses the subject and the mood at hand. |
Studio 6: Anne Novak and Purnell Pettyjohn
Anne Novak
You can always reach me at The Art Box My favorite medium is glass enamel on copper. Sifting the powdered glass over the hand cut stencil and creating the layers of a finished piece is fascinating. Even with careful planning, you don't know how it will turn out as each firing changes the layers. My other passion is pigment sticks. They are much more immediate, allowing completion of a painting in an hour or so. The vivid colors are creamy and luscious and blend visually on the canvas with no premixing. lt's like drawing on the bathroom mirror with your mother's lipstick. My life as a shopkeeper keeps me so busy that the moments for painting are extremely precious. |
Purnell Pettyjohn
www.purnellpettyjohn.com [email protected] My paintings are expressions of my feelings toward everyday observations. By mingling vivid colors, I try to enliven what could easily become mundane for the viewer. Hopefully, the viewer will enjoy my excitement for my subject matter. Purnell teaches watercolor classes to adults, in her studio. She teaches beginner, intermediate and advance level students. If interested in a class, please contact Purnell directly. |

434-528-4181 [email protected] “The question is not what you look at, but what you see.” Henry David Thoreau My art is small and quiet, showing the inner workings of my sensibilities. I try to give a visual voice to the realm of daily life that surrounds me, in the area where I grew up and in which I work. I am drawn to figures and landscapes, painting them on a small scale to be viewed as intimate jewels of light, form, value and shape. I have been teaching painting, to both beginners and advanced painters, for over 25 years in classes and in workshops. |
