Spiral Bound and Padded Papers

Watercolor Pads: Watercolor paper comes in such a range of qualities that it can be hard to know which to choose for any given situation. While student papers may be an inexpensive way to start painting, they tend to handicap the user right from the start. A good quality paper will hold up to repeated scrubbing and glazing, whereas a cheap paper will start to roll up after only a little rubbing. Because truly cheap papers are so disappointing, The Art Box doesn't carry them. Even our lower priced papers can be counted on to be basically sound and good to work with. On the other hand, the more you spend on a sheet, the more pleasure it may bring, since some of the most interesting and cooperative watercolor papers are hand made on traditional moulds that leave the paper without an obvious grain. If you haven't tried fine watercolor paper, buy a sheet or two for yourself or someone special and see how it can make you feel spoiled rotten. The Art Box carries watercolor papers in blocks and pads from the following companies: Arches, Sennelier, Winsor & Newton, Borden & Riley, Strathmore, Fabriano and Bienfang.

Pastel Pads: The Art Box carries pastel from Sennelier, Wallis, Fabriano, Mi Tientes, Color Fix, Bienfang. Some of the papers we carry are very unusual, such as Sennelier's La Carte Pastel, a 200 lb., pH neutral board, surfaced with finely ground vegetable flakes and cork which yields a paper that is slightly abrasive yet has a perfectly smooth and uniform tooth. Pigment adhesion is so good that fixative is hardly needed.  Fabriano's Tiziano is acid-free with a deep tooth and beautiful felt colors in pale blue, rose grey, felt grey, steel grey, charcoal grey, and black.

Drawing and Sketch Pads: The Art Box carries a wide range of drawing papers in pads and spiral bound sketchbooks. Our smallest pads are the little Lama Li pocket sketch books which measure just 3"x4", and our largest are Strathmore's Newsprint at 18"x24". Surfaces vary too, from the extra smooth Bienfang bristol, to the toothy Sennelier D340 Carte d'art. We stock some very unusual items, such as the square Sennelier Le Maxi Block sketch pads that come 250 sheets to a pad in sizes 6"x6", 10"x10" and 12.5"x12.5".  We have such a broad assortment, it is hard to list them all. We have products from all the following manufacturers: Sennelier, Pentalic, Robert Bateman recycled, Bienfang, Canson, Fabriano, Rising, Aquabee, Strathmore, Borden & Riley and others. If we don't stock your favorite pads, we can probably special order it.

Gridded Pads: The Art Box carries cross section and isometric paper in a number of different paper and grid sizes. Our smallest pads are 2.9"x4.1" and our largest are 18"x24".

Tracing Pads: The Art Box carries tracing pads from Strathmore and Bienfang.  Architectural trace can be found in our Architecture section.

Charcoal Pads: The Art Box carries Strathmore charcoal pads in several sizes.

Yupo Pads: Not technically a paper, Yupo is a sheet of plastic - a state-of-the-art synthetic material offering all the attributes of the highest quality papers with the added benefits of extraordinary durability.  Ideally suited for a number of applications, excelling in aqua-media usage.  Super smooth, hH neutral, 100% recyclable.  Pads come in varying sizes.

Canvas Paper: Canvas paper is a handy substitute for woven canvas; it has a canvas-like surface, is primed and may be mounted, stretched or used on the pad. The Art Box carries Fredrix medium-textured, acrylic primed canvas paper for all media (9"x12", 12"x16", 18"x24") and their watercolor canvas pads for water media (same sizes).  The Art Box carries Bienfang Paper Canvas pads in 18"x24".

Disposable Palette Paper: Multi-Palette pads contain disposable, individual palette sheets which are impervious to oil, casein, and acrylic paints. The Art Box carries 50 sheet pads in sizes 9x12 and 12x16.

Art Skills Eraser Paper:  With a coating of charcoal, these sheets allow you to easily work repeatedly on the same surface in order to experiment or improve skills.

Scratchboard Sheets: Coated with india ink, these sheets allow you to scratch into the surface of the blackened paper in order to reveal white underneath.  Provides high contrast for stark images.

Khadi Papers:  Khadi rag papers are made from 100% cotton rag. Genuine rag papers are rare and it is the fibre length of this raw material that gives Khadi rag papers their exceptional strength and durability.  These handmade papers are made sheet by sheet, loft dried, and surface sized.  The Art Box carries packs of these fine papers in several sizes.

Paperworks St. Armand Handmade Paper: A white paper, made of 100% cotton rag in 150lb (320 g/cm²) and rough finish.  Good for printmaking, ink, acrylic (sturdy enough, you do not need to use gesso) and embossing. This sheet resists soaking in water.  Water-based colours or inks will not bleed on it.  A wide range of formats from 4” x 5” to 6 feet x 10 feet (10.5 cm x 13 cm to 183 cm x 300 cm).  The Art Box carries packs of these papers.

Boards and Films

Foam Board: Foam Board cuts easily and cleanly with a razor blade. It is quite rigid and has an extremely smooth surface suitable for dry-mounting. The Art Box stocks 32"x40" foam board in 1/8" and 3/16", and can acquire larger sizes upon request.  Acid-free foam core also available.
