DEXTER
WHITEHEAD
Nancy Bass:
Inspired by the picturesque views surrounding her
family cattle farm in the "Red Hill" area of Southern Albemarle
County, Nancy Bass paints landscapes in oils and watercolors.
There is a great strength to her work, whether it be the deep
blue of the Virginia mountains, the blocky forms of her black
and white cows, or the rich green fields on which they stand.
Color, light and form are always her primary concerns. Nancy
Bass has won numerous awards and ribbons for her paintings,
including honors in the Charlottesville-Albemarle Art Association
Juried Show, Paintings From The Piedmont Annual
Show, and the Staunton-Augusta Art Center Juried Regional
Exhibition where her painting Summer Afternoon
won First Place. Click here to see more images by Nancy

Beate Casati:
Born and raised in Germany, Beate Casati came
to America at the age of 19. She brought with her a love of
art that led her to the Corcoran School of Art in Washington,
D.C., where she specialized in print making. She was accepted
for the Washington Area Print Makers Association Juried Show
judged by Joshua P. Smith. Most of her current work is multi
media, combining inks, pastel, watercolor, acrylic and often
plaster and clay into her pieces. As you can imagine, her
work is often three dimensional. While much of her subject
matter is traditional, the way in which she approaches it
gives her work a contemporary edge. Recently, Beate Casati's
painting of a grasshopper titled Last Song won Third
Place in the Twelfth Annual Paintings From The Piedmont
Art Show. Click here to see more images by Beate

Peter Hunter:
After studying at the Leo Marchutz School of Painting
and Drawing in Provence, France, and at the California College
of Arts and Crafts, Peter Hunter returned to Charlottesville,
Virginia. Through his watercolor paintings he interprets the
timeless beauty of his native Albemarle county with a freely
rendered brushstroke, a discerning eye for the dramatic effects
of light, and a long-established rapport with the land. He
brings imagination, warmth, and a strong sense of composition
to his plein air paintings. His passion for painting is contagious
and his weekly open studio drawing groups are always packed
with artists trying to capture the human form. Peter Hunter
is one of Charlottesville's great treasures. Click here to

Dexter
Whitehead: A retired dean of the Graduate School
of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia, Dexter
Whitehead has been part of the University community for
most of the past half century. This familiarity gives him
an insider's view of UVA that he brings to his canvases. While
his classic paintings of the Rotunda are warm and captivating,
some of his most interesting scenes are the places that are
off the beaten track. The East Range, the Pavilion Gardens,
the Chapel and the tunnel under the Rotunda have all been
subjects for his oil and watercolor paintings. Light and shadows
playing off the Lawn columns provide one of his favorite subjects.
It is Dexter Whitehead's ability to capture these insider's
views that make his work so appealing to his audience. Click
